Our goal in breeding Rottweilers is that we can produce puppies of excellent health, temperament, and structure who will make loyal, gentle family companions. Below is more information about our breeding philosophy and breeding program!!
We are located in central Pennsylvania, near Catawissa in Montour County. Our Rottweilers enjoy farm life and the wide open spaces on our 80 acre farm. Most of our land here is fields were we grow corn, wheat, and soybeans.
Our Rottweilers are all of Serbian and German pedigrees. All of our dogs were either imported from Europe or are puppies that we bred from imported parents. Our dogs come from Serbia, Poland, Romania, and the Ukraine. The story behind each imported dog is very unique!
Our Rottweilers are AKC registered. You can look up all of their pedigrees on either workingdog.com or Pedigree Database.
We treasure excellent Temperament in our Rottweilers. We believe that temperament is both genetically and environmentally affected. So we begin by choosing Rottweilers with great temperaments and with a family history of dogs with great temperaments. But temperament also has a lot to do with the circumstances surrounding puppyhood! Our puppies are born in the house, in the middle of family hubbub! We handle them and cuddle them from day one! I truly believe that a great part of socialization is this: teaching puppies to adjust to new things. Our pups are introduced to many new things as they develop- new surfaces, new smells, loud noises, and different voices on audio. We also take them in the car to visit grandma or just take them on a drive. Socialization needs to continue after you get your puppy too. But for the first while, socialization will be happening in your own home and garden as your puppy explores his new territory. Once your pup has more of his vaccines, he will benefit from meeting other dogs, going to puppy classes, and going on family outings with you to expand his horizons! A puppy who learns to adapt to many different circumstances is a happy, confident dog!
The strength of every dog is his structure. A dog with great structure moves with ease and grace. A dog with great structure has a balanced over-all appearance. We try hard to choose dogs with immaculate conformation and mate our parent dogs in a way that compliments each parent's weakness- because no dog is totally perfect!
We believe in health tested parents for healthier puppies. Our parent Rottweilers are OFA Hip and Elbow screened at age 1 year for their OFA Prelims and 2 years for their OFA finals. Our dogs also receive OFA heart and cardiac exams. Additionally, All of our Rottweilers get the Pawprints Rottweiler panel that tests for DM, JLPP, LEMP, NAD, and MTM1. Screening our parent dogs for health issues has definitely improved the quality of puppies we provide. But since we live in an imperfect world, sometimes our pups, just like normal humans, are imperfect too! That's why we offer a 2 Year Genetic Health Guarantee.
At Sharp Ridge Rottweilers, we have a "NO TAIL DOCKING" Policy. In Europe, tail docking has been abolished for quite a few years. We think tail docking is cruel to our tiny Rottweilers and is an unnecessary stress in the newborn phase of life when their trust in humans is already being established. If you are unfamiliar with the long tail on a Rottweiler, just watch a dog with a long tail and you will find that long tail to be a beautiful part of God's creation that would be shameful to remove! Rottweilers typically carry their tails over their back and wag them when they are happy. I love to hold a fat Rottie pup and feel his tail thumping against my legs! We do remove the rear dew claws on our Rottweiler pups.
If you are interested in getting a Rottweiler puppy from us, please begin the process by submitting an APPLICATION. After you submit your application, we usually respond within 24-48 hours. If your application is approved, you are welcome to schedule a visit to meet the dogs. Visits are welcome by appointment only. We usually schedule visits between 10 AM and Noon on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. We are not available on Sundays or Tuesdays. On occasion, we offer evening visiting hours.
Depending on when you contact us, we might have pups available at the time or be anticipating a future litter. If we don't have pups available at the time, you will be welcome to join our waiting-list. We ask a $200 non-refundable deposit if you want to be on our waiting-list. The families with deposits on our litter will get to choose their pup in the order their deposits were put down. As the pups grow, we try to send families with deposits on the litter photos of the pups every week-ten days. When the pups are 6-7 weeks old, we will schedule those families to come and choose their pups! On the average, you can plan on it taking an hour to choose your pup. Of course, the more pups available to choose from, the harder it is to choose! If you cannot come to the farm to choose your puppy, you can choose virtually thru zoom or photos.
If you are unable to come to the farm to take your puppy home, we have 2 transport nanny options who can be hired to bring your puppy to your door. If you live on the east coast, ground transport is a great option for you! If you live in the west, it will be best to fly your pup to your nearest airport so your pup does not need to spend multiple days in the car. Alternatively, some puppy parents choose to fly to one of our local airports and then rent a vehicle to drive their new puppy home. Our 2 closest airports are WilkesBarre/Scranton-AVP (1.25 hr away) and Harrisburg-MDT (1.3 hr away). We have a 2.5 hour drive to PHL and a 2.75 hour drive to EWR.
At time of sale, we provide you with a portfolio with thorough documentation of your new Rottweiler's Health and Pedigree History. This folder includes pedigrees, AKC registration, Microchip Reunite Info, Vaccination Records, Vet Exam certificates, and copies of both parent's health testing certificates. We ask that you take this folder of information along to your vet visits in order to seamlessly transfer your puppy's health care to your new vet. Your vet is always welcome to contact us with any questions about the new puppy or dog.
As always, please contact us with any questions you have during the adoption process!
